Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Domestic violence remains a pressing global issue, with significant social, psychological, and economic consequences for victims and communities. In Nigeria, the prevalence of domestic violence has prompted the enactment of various anti-violence policies and interventions aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals, especially women and children (Oluwaseun & Adeniran, 2023). Takum Local Government in Taraba State, like many parts of Nigeria, faces challenges in addressing domestic violence, including cultural norms that perpetuate abuse, inadequate enforcement of laws, and limited access to support services for victims.
Policies such as the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act and state-level gender-based violence laws have been introduced to mitigate domestic violence and support survivors. However, the effectiveness of these policies depends on factors such as awareness, enforcement mechanisms, and community engagement (Abubakar et al., 2024). This study evaluates the impact of anti-violence policies on reducing domestic violence in Takum Local Government, examining their implementation, effectiveness, and areas for improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of anti-violence policies, domestic violence persists in Takum Local Government due to weak enforcement, cultural resistance, and limited awareness of legal protections (Chukwu & Ibrahim, 2024). Victims often face barriers in accessing justice and support services, exacerbating the problem. This study evaluates the effectiveness of these policies in addressing domestic violence and identifies strategies to enhance their impact.
